From what I am told, the name of this dragonfly is the Widow Skimmer. I took this picture at Nehantic Forest in Lyme Connecticut last August. I couldn't seem to get a picture of a bird so I resorted to insects.

I don't know where they get their names but thought it was beautiful too. I don't know much about photography.I have the automatic Canon S2 IS and seem to have to rely on luck to get a good shot.-One of these days I'd like to try a DSLR.-I thought this almost looks like a stick pin for an entomologist

Larry, great shot of a cool dragonfly. I think it's a young male. The body coloration of the females and immature males is the same, but this one appears to be developing a whitish mid-spot on the wings indicative of a male.
