The afternoon is heavy on your shoulders

3)Living is easy with eyes closed- Misunderstanding all you see -It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out -It doesn't matter much to me

4) Then turn around, head for the lights of town-Hurtin' me through and through -(slow 50's hit song about a man who has a color for a last name that rhymes with true)

5) Because there's good in everyone- And a new day has begun -You can see the morning sun if you try.

11)For I've got to be free..Free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board I'm the captain-So climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow-On every shore

Larry, I knew the same ones as Ruthiej. John Denver and Cher. I know more bird than songs, but not by their taxonomic names. I didn't even try. I was all excited today about a burrowing owl that has taken up residence in the wash next to my house. He's livng in a drainage pipe but will probably get washed out with the rain that's expected this sunday. Nice Cardinal shot!

ruthiej.-way to go!

kathie-I'd be pretty excited about a burrowing owl too!-Maybe next time you'll be first on the songs you know.

From Maya Angelou:

I know why the caged bird sings

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wing in the orange suns rays and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

Laura-You made me laugh with that comment!I don't think you've ever answered song lyrics-although you do pretty well when I post up photos of plants and flowers.

Oh, well. I knew 8 and 13 and a few on the tip of my tongue. I'm too late and it's too late in the day for me to think - especially with Nyquil...

Dangit, I had the MTM theme song, but Ruthie J beat me to it. The rest--???? This is a tough one!

1) Sam Cooke -- The Best Things in Life Are Free

5) Jose Feliciano -- Theme song for Chico and the Man

9) Van Morrison -- Domino

I love Van Morrison and Sam Cooke. I guess knowing the theme song speaks to my ill spent youth. Sigh...

Larry said...

Mary-No problem-I believe you-easy on the Niquil though.

Dzugman-better luck next time!

trixie-Great job! Glad I hit your category.

Every one was answered except song 4 and poem 2.

It took a while, all I could come up with was "Ode on a Grecian Urn." I had to dissect that in high school. I figured it was some kind of Keats, so after plowing through my Norton's Anthology (just think of it as a field guide for basic poetry), I came up with "Ode to a Nightingale," also by John Keats. Sheesh, that was bugging me.

Trixie-Great Job! Sounds like a good book to have.
